One of the highlights of Aquaria KLCC is a giant tank (featuring an authentic-looking shipwreck) – a 90m walk-through tunnel with a moving travelator in its centre. Inside you’ll be surrounded by sand tiger sharks, huge stingrays and more. You can take a break from looking at Nemo and his crew, as you head to The Stream which plays host to the giant water rat and the adorable Asian small-clawed otter. KL BIRD PARK (15 minutes by Taxi)
Located in the serene and scenic Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, it is only 10 minutes’ drive away from the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. It is home to more than 3,000 local and foreign birds of approximately 200 different species. Sunway Lagoon Theme Park is located in Petaling Jaya – a thriving satellite town – about 15km southwest of the Kuala Lumpur city centre. With a variety of watery rides on offer and plenty of dry-land activities too, there are few more fun ways to spend a day than cooling down at Sunway.
Water slides that whirl and twirl, a manmade ‘river’ ride, a surf beach, a wave pool, a 360° revolving pirate ship… the list of fun attractions at the 80-acre park is extensive. Built on the site of a former tin mine and quarry, when it first opened the highlights of this multi-zone theme park were its water slides and the world’s largest manmade surf beach. Petrosains Kuala Lumpur is a 7,000sqm interactive science discovery centre located on the fourth floor of the Petronas Twin Towers. Good for a few hours of fun-filled activity, the complex is largely dedicated to the field of petroleum science and presents science and technology in a fun and entertaining way.
Arranged in an easy-to-navigate ‘museum-style’ concept with a collection of everything from space age exhibits to fossils, it is also a great place to learn more about other scientific issues. Since its opening in 1999, this hands-on interactive science museum has been popular with locals as well as expatriate families. KIDZANIA (30 minutes by Taxi)
Kidzania Kuala Lumpur (or Kidzania KL) is a memorable, edutainment centre designed to show and encourage kids to ‘work’ in professional jobs. Teaching them about different career choices, it looks like an indoor city with miniature-sized replicas of office buildings and cars: once you breeze through the AirAsia airport-style entrance, children can take turns performing over 90 different types of grown-up jobs including pretending to be a surgeon, judge, mechanic and hairdresser.
We also loved the office, where kids undergo physical ‘tests’ to become a certified Kidzania Secret Agent, or have your kid don a pilot’s uniform at the AirAsia flight simulator and ‘fly’ a plane. But by far the most thrilling job is when they get to become honorary fire fighters, ride a fire truck and extinguish a hotel fire. A not-to-be-missed moment comes when kids pretending to be policemen engage in crowd control!
Other highlights include an Actor’s Academy, Magic Studio, Surgery Room, C.S.I. Lab, Dentist’s Office and Courthouse.Only adults with a kid are allowed entrance into the 80,000sqft Kidzania, and only children can enter ‘office’ buildings – you can watch your child through office windows.
